I just skimmed the novel so from what I can tell it ends without him ever really convincing Nicole that he loves her or making his previous neglect up to her. Nicole ends up being invited to study abroad by Caroline's fiance and he follows her frustrated that she doesn't understand that he doesn't want a loveless marriage with her.
Seems pretty anti-climactic
