Oxidization. Veins are always blue, or blueish purple. Mainly because the blood in the vein hasn't been oxidized outside the human body. If you look at someone's veins you see that they're blue. If I could send a photo of my veins I would. You can see them pretty well under direct light. Try looking at you wrist to see your own veins.
