i hope this answers your question without being spoiler-ish but he drops the san lang act pretty soon in the series
(( further on he does sometimes present himself as san lang only when other officials are present (ex. shi qing xuan) ))
probably like 99 times out of 100 when hes 1 on 1 with xie lian, he uses his normal adult appearance

I'm currently reading the first novel (Ch.7) and how long is Hua Cheng/San Lang (If it is him, I'm just assuming) going to stay 16/17 years old?
I don't know if I'm comfortable with the age gap (if Xie Lian is attracted to his teenage form)
