It takes even real life people a long time to realize some things. This isn't surprising and it's more realistic. He will learn his mistake eventually. He didn't act rude and forcing this time, he was more composed. He thought Dan was still desperate for money and that it would make him come back but didn't realize some other things yet. But he will with time. Lemme tell you I know some people who just never realize some things even when you clearly point it out to them many times.
I'd say it's more realistic that he didn't realize all stuff so soon just because Dan left him. Now he'll experience Dan treating him differently and will start learning some stuff.
