I thought nepotism too but now I see a pic of a flashback of Asha as a commander and he looked so buff and fierce, so probably he was indeed capable and we know he is book smart, so maybe he was great at learning strategies and stuff. So must be that during his years of demotion he stopped all his training and became like this (￣∇￣")
