I think you're wrong on the first part, shinju is the child of Shiren's father's wife and a foreigner. And Shiren is his father and his father's mistress's child, which technically means that they are not blood related.

I don't know if I'm 100% right but in vol 5, Shiren is told the secret by his biological mother (currently in the manga and still a lover of his dad) and Shiren finally understood why his "mother" hated him, how come there was always the foregin doll in her room, and why she always wanted a daughter.
AND if you still don't understand, Shiren's mother hated him because she had to accept him as her own son and not wanting others to know he is the only SON/CHILD, that her husband had with his mistress.
And also Shiren's mother was bearing Shinju with a foreginer at the time when Shiren was growing up, so she gave up Shinju, which deepens her hatred for Shiren, and mentally abusing him, saying she wanted a daughter more. By the way, little Shiren at that time didn't know that his "mother" wasn't his birth mother, so he was naive enough to believe her.
