from what I gathered, her father said to her not to return because she was a stubborn child and would have refused to go back to zach if she went to visit them. I think that's also the reason they didn't communicate with her for 9 years was because she would want to go back home if they sent letters to her. It was a way to ensure she stays married to zach.
the dad isn't a good person imo but you can clearly tell he loves his daughter despite being a prick about everything.
if I'm wrong, pls correct me but this was my take on the situation.
