Okay, I'm gonna have to disagree here. I've read all 6 novels multiple times, analyzed the shit out them since I genuinely think there is some interesting and unique concepts in LHCBWN. I think it's incredibly realistic depiction of struggling with a mental health condition no one tries to understand in the world we live in. I do think the author takes it too far with things in the first volume (these scenes are ones I don't like to revisit), but Wooyeon absolutely changes and evolves as a character there's just no denying that. He becomes incredibly caring, communicative, conscious whilst still grappling with his disability. He struggles with his own darks thoughts and overwhelming possessive nature, and even implements his own strategies to help with not acting them out because he doesn't want to hurt and deter Inseob. He cannot change the fact he struggles to feel complex emotions or have empathy for the people around him, but the one person that is uique to that is most ways is Inseob. He changes for him, and him alone. I just felt I needed to come to the series defence, because saying wooyeon "doesn't" change feels like it's slapping all that development in the fact. It's just not true (⊙…⊙ )
That's why I said he's not going to get any better. He just passive aggressively cares about Inseob cause he doesn't want Inseob to leave him. For me I don't see a character growth, more like if anything Inseob just become his tethering point to stop doing something so impulsive. Because if he did, Inseob will have to cover for him.
It depends on what kind of redeeming arc people are looking for. I didn't comment much on his morality and behaviour because I know he's not normal. So in some sense I wasn't expecting him to get any better. He's always driven for his own convenience and this will not change even when he is in a relationship with Inseob. He tries sometimes, but it wouldn't work for long due to his impatience. So he will always come up with something that's indirectly making Inseob uncomfortable. Of course he doesn't notice this, because as long as Inseob is willing to give in to whatever he wants to do, not leave him, it's a win situation for him. Inseob has always been so willing and forgiving towards him anyway. This is why he cannot let Inseob go. Inseob is very forgiving towards his ASD behaviour.
So like the whole novel isn't exactly about redeeming arc or growing as a character. For me it's more like some people are just meant to be together no matter how much outsider look at them. What matters they adapt towards each other. For better or for worst.
Changing just for one person isn't a character grow. His 'understanding' or 'kindness' to Inseob in later chapters is his own compromise to keep Inseob stay with him. He was indeed didn't change, except his acknowledgment that he loves Inseob. Towards the one person he loves, he willing to act accordingly so his lover won't suffer. This may seem romantic, but for a wide perspective, with Wooyeon still treat other people without compassion, Wooyeon has no character development.
This not really in the topic, you may skip.
I know a story of a man who was born with alexithymia. He has no capability to feel or have emotions as normal as others. He played a piano and sing in happy tone at his grandma death day. Many criticize him, some asked him what was he thinking for doing that, he just say everyone looks sad so he want to make people happy with a song. Despite his incapability to have human emotions, he didn't grow up to be a jerk. By time he learn what emotions people are having in certain situation. He may be lacking, but he willing to learn because he care.
That might not totally be the same with Wooyeon condition, but my point is the willingness to learn so someone with personality disorder able to at least understand people around them, because they're care. They accept their shortcomings, instead of blaming it or making excuse then weaponizing it to be a jerk, they're care enough to learn and adapt so people around them wouldn't be hurt.
OP in this topic present some topics;
1. Wooyeon won't get better
Agree becuse even if he 'change', it is solely for Inseob just so Inseob stay with him. It is more like compromise for his lover.
2. There's no redemption arc.
Wooyeon will never in groveling wife chasing crematorium, indeed. Because Inseob could never get let him be miserable. Inseob is too much a doormat for that to happen.
3. Wooyeon still act passive aggressive.
This is true. When you read the novel, you know well how Inseob still feel dejected when Wooyeon showing his disapproval towards something. Yes, Wooyeon follow what Inseob want in the end, but is that really need to happen if Wooyeon sincerely wishing for Inseob's wants? Wooyeon might not be intentional, as he has a fucked mind, but in the end he did doing the passive aggressive behavior.
So yeah, this is a story about that. Really resonate with the tittle. Simply put, a story about two person who have mental problem that compliment each other. May sound bad, but I don't hate the story. After all this is quite unique compared to many other bl stories with the same plotline and cliche.
I've got bad news for people who are expecting he will get better. He won't. I am more shocked that the MC stayed with ML until the end than him not getting any better. I mean they do say love is blind.... So yeah.
But anyway, if you're expecting the ML will get a redemption arc, no he won't. The best he would do is catering to MC with passive aggressiveness. With his messed up head, I do believe he's trying his best later lol. Can't expect much of him.
