Lol, is there really a general rule?
That yaoi logic card and yaoi created by women for women is all things you made up, there are gay men who can even wrote them and there are women who can observe the painful reality of being a gay men. Yaoi is a form of art and should not be generalize or perceive as medium to mostly show sexual gratifications, some of them even gives good real life lesson.
But, as long as there is a romance tag in the genre and it involves two men or other genders. You are already bound to expect seeing romantic feelings or as you want - romantic logic.
Now, pointing out manipulation in romance involving two gay men shouldn't be dealt and justified using yaoi logic just because it is created by a women who dont know what is manipulation nor romance.
Im not literally saying romance tag in the cover page but in the genre itself or story, since they become lovey dovey couple. But the presentation of yaoi is already related to romance, it shows sex but it cannot be related mostly with rape/SA/ cheating / manipulation/ stockholm and other fuck up plot.
... Anyway, thanks for making your original comment, you're actually one of the reasons I didn't stumble into anything I didn't wanna see. So, there's that. Seeing other gays give their perspective is nice. Just gonna let this argument die out cause it's not gonna go anywhere but I appreciate you for the comment :3 !
Thanks also to your perspective. Also, you are one of the reason why generalizing yaoi logic is the reason why small details not seen nor warned isnt being discuss and only people with keen observation for manipulation can see through it unintentionally.
I also find it difficult to continue an argument using the yaoi logic and one of the reason why I originally replied to lanlala of it being a bs.
So… gay men aren’t allowed to have opinions on their depictions in media, despite being… another oppressed group?
Like, it kind of sounds like you’re saying it’s okay for women to depict the abuse and rape of another oppressed group as something cute, erotic, and desirable… because they are women?
And based on my experience, the people who criticize the romanticization of rape and abuse in BL … basically completely overlaps with people who would criticize it in literally any other media. It’s not like it’s a double standard.
Fun fact: 1/4 to 2/5 (25-40%) of gay men have been the victims of sexual violence (solely based on reported numbers). Meaning that, the average gay man is just as likely, even potentially slightly more likely, to experience sexual violence when compared to the average woman.
Calling it a “yaoi subculture” is really funny. The way we use “yaoi” is a western bastardization of the term and not used at all like how we use it. And that shonen ai historically means pedophilia/pederasty.
LGBT activists who have spoken about BL have also claimed that they believe that the reason many BL authors are completely anonymous is because they believe a good amount of them are queer, notably queer men or transmasc. The notion that BL is “by women, for women” is… patently a falsehood. A pretty recent survey found that just over 30% of Japanese BL readers are men.
I do agree that this isnt the worst yaoi we read, its just that how the Ml redeem himself isnt deeply conveyed and his actions while they are on relationship centralized or focus more about sex.
Same goes to naui who sought for body intimacy after the ML leave him and then there is a scene where he apologized and then they have sex once again.
The point of my original comment was not to degrade other readers who says it is a fluffy green flag manhwa, but rather have a more keen observation for romantic plots like this one and set a higher standard in choosing what is green from yellow to red.
Even my word of choice "find it weird" doesn't degrade other readers, but to question and maybe if possible, made them realize what is a genuine romance even if it is the same gender or not.
Cause personally, the HIV cases in our country is rising and I saw twitter post regarding many gay people accepting the high probability of them being positive in HIV due to sexual intercourse. It makes me wonder how most of us crave for love and advocate for love, but only to get attached sexually. That is why Im contemplating more logically in this manhwa (Lol, I got sidetracked and share more opinions)
But thats just it (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
I also read other opinions who agreed that yaoi should not be generalized as something just for entertainment and sexual gratifications.
This is why I love that one japanese bl manga where they tell the story of a real gay couple. Its just that I love to see more people getting higher standards in this fictions although they are not real, since there are bl authors who only draw for money, but I do hope they become more genuine in their love for BL. (≧∀≦)
I read this more logically in the aspect of gay relationship (cause Im still a single gay virgin)
I find it weird how people say this is fluffy and the seme is green flag. TBH, I see him more as a yellow flag (middle of green and red)
The beginning chapters were odd and annoying, I get that they already fix it and is being fluffy. But the premise on the first chapter of the side story?
Its like the ML is manipulating the MC to having seggs by seeing fault at his action. That is clearly not green flag. Also his redemption for trying to dub-con the MC at the beginning isnt fleshed out and just portrayed by staying away from the uke.
Also the premise of this manhwa is all about having seggs and naui (bottom) is just a typical slut bottom for their tops in manhwa's I already read. I dont care if this is just a fiction, but portraying a gay bottom like this isnt close to fluffy for me.
That's it, I just want to share my perspective since most of you all are seeing this in the shades of green.
