First of all, characterisation shouldn't depend on backstories. They're supposed to be interwoven and intuitive — and the only thing we got is mc is a clutz and a dumbass and the ml is mysterious and horny but hey at least he asks for consent (or did he idr). We're in the double digits, and neither the mc or ml has substance or flavour. Second of all, judging from the flow, the backstories aren't gg to be mind blowing either — like ok ml probably went through some sort of psychological or physical abuse in his rich household and mc is trying to save his father who may or may not be biologically related. What's new?
19 days is an example of gd characterisation and mind you, they have lesser than 10 panels for each chapter. Or Jinx, and I hate Jinx, but they do have their own established personality from the start even if it's cliche. Lost In the Cloud — v clear characterisation of the mc from the get go but ml's hidden personality unravels as season 1 progresses. And their backstories served to give more depth to their characters, way later in the season.
But hey, if you liked this, good for you! I'll continue maybe, when there's more chapters.
At ch14 this story pmo. They've fucked twice but there's zero chemistry and no one seems to have a personality around here.
