it's the opposite. the terminology of seme (top) and uke (bottom) have existed since the 80s or 90s and dom sub is just the correspoding terminology in BDSM works, but i think dom and sub is also interchangeably used as top and bottom sometimes. anyway seme and uke are japanese words and still mean the same
Ehhhh??? Dom and sub is used in a subcategory of BL in the DomxSub verse (basically a bdsm universe). It's sort of like Omegaverse, but more kinky. Seme and Uke are OOOOLD terms, used across all genres.
dom and sub refers to dominant and submissive personality traits and uhhhh, in the bdsm sense too.
uke means they bottom, and seme means they top. these terms are not mutually exclusize. there can be a seme sub and a dom uke, or reverese. but there CANNOT be a top uke and a bottom seme.
unless we're talking about seke/ reverse but thats a whole other can of worms.
thats the end of my ted talk.
oh right, dom and sub traits don't have to be part of the domxsub verse, it could just be a kinky manga with bdsm in it or whatever. the reason i approached the question that way is because you confused the terms, which implies to me it was a manga/manhwa with those terms being used in a referential manner, where those names played some kind of role.
ok, now im done.
one more time, sorry i just keep remembering things.
Dom and Sub is commonly referenced within their works because of the BDSM nature, and how you have to tell your partner what your into. OR because its in the sub/dom AU/verse because it's a literal Biological trait, Like how you can't go three seconds in an omegaverse AU without someone going "you're an omega?!?!"
it's self referential like that. You aren't used to seeing "seme" and "uke" because they typically would say something like "I only top" within the narrative.
Seme and uke are the most common term for BL readers and OG fujoshis who enjoy yaoi manga because a lot of people read japanese yaoi for their first experience when reading BL comics and adopted the terms seme/uke. Top and bottom are usually for English speakers who enjoy BL but unfamiliar with the japanese terms. Chinese have gong and shou.
Pray tell me, when did the dom and sub start to be called seme and uke,I took a break from yaoi for prolly a yr now,and now I'm confused what's what,
