When you have powers of both Guide and as an Esper, that does make you powerful but it can also come with others wanting that power. Ranking as a lower guide had let him fly under the radar and now his strategy is to hide in plain sight so to speak. Personally I think its a risky move since the princess and prince might get their hands on him if he slips up too much (and maybe the king).
