I think they just tried to collect as much manpower to prevent apocalypse they didn't tell him to directly die in exchange of humanity or anything. if you want to say it like that, then they basically sacrifice all the hunters/powerful people to protect the weak.
but yeah if anything they put J in pedestal more bc he's number 1 hunter.

Shit the translation didn't let me get emotional in a right way!!! Please stop the Whale thingy translation!!! It's confusing since it's a bit of a complicated story!! They literally refered to Sayoung as a 'she'!!! I mean at least if it's a bad translation make the least effort of revising it *sigh* I might sound as a jerk and ungrateful but it's fine(￣へ￣）
