Dark Romance romanticizes abuse as well and women are fucking weird about it too. They usually refuse to read books that don’t have any form of abuse or straight up porn. My problem is that people shouldn’t romanticize these topics even if it doesn’t affect their morals why are they romanticizing that even in fiction when real people go through that. This includes BL because well it is targeted towards women and most people who read bl are women. I’m not sure why you compared it to men since again BL genre is not targeted towards them but of course, if you wanna compare men with the porn industry that is totally different because you are right it does affect men morally. I don’t think they’re compatible since women will romanticize about those ideas, but they usually won’t act upon them while men will rape and murder women. That doesn’t necessarily mean they should be romanticizing and getting off to those ideas.

i respect your opinion even though i don’t agree! it’s controversial for a reason, but imo these spaces were better being talked about quietly on the internet and social media instead of overtly promoted and shown towards any audience. i agree that it is romanized but only to the extent where someone can enjoy it specifically in fiction while also condemning and treating it healthily irl. i view dark romance as a gratification outlet reserved for mature adult audiences because while it can affect younger brains, i also believe it can’t harm or affect those with the ability to process it as just fiction

real people go through situations like rape, murder, abuse, child neglect etc which are common tropes in yaoi- but wanting a majority female audience to see it in fiction only for entertainment isn’t as terrible as it sounds. the difference of how men react to porn vs women matters because people often used the real impacts it has to compare it to women reading drawn or written smut. besides the difference of action, dark romance also doesn’t exploit marginalized communities (poor people needing to do sex work to survive) and hasn’t pushed any type of agenda for menicide, male violence, or overall some type of oppression. ik this sounds funny but idgaf about fictional men so seeing them be harmed in ways women always have been lowkey does satisfy me . i could never read straight smuts with trashy tropes… its only reserved for my yaoi brain because its nice seeing men be hurt lol

I disagree bc that type of mindset you described can be harmful, even when it's framed as a personal outlet for fictional enjoyment. Rape shouldn’t be entertainment like just because men, as a group, have historically been oppressors doesn't justify portraying their victimization as a form of entertainment. No group, regardless of gender or privilege, should have their trauma commodified for consumption, even in fiction. You shouldn’t be OK with rape happening to men fiction and not women especially in BL. Not to mention this just stereotypes gay men as being predatory.

yea that’s where our standpoints clash. idm seeing an oppressor be treated as something to be commodified since it’s nowhere near the reality that happens to them. their victimization comes as fictional, harmless things to be read. because even when it’s consumed it’s not actively harming someone or convincing them rape, murder, abuse, toxic relationship are something that should be normal or acceptable. it exists in the vacuum it’s made and then it’s left alone after. you can be okay with not reading it and even telling people not to read it but it’s not perpetuating that things youre worried about. reading dark topics is harmful on paper and in theory. but can you explain what makes it harmful and not only labeling it as such?(im being so serious im trying to understand your pov not argue for fun)

and it doesn’t stereotype gay man as predatory? all genders are capable of it. i didn’t feel the need to mention it earlier but i do read toxic yuri too, just not straight ones. im capable of reading dark stories in cases between men- but also i do read a majority of wholesome, well written bl/yuri/others too!! so yes i do think it’s unhealthy to ONLY consume this as a main form of entertainment because ppl should consume a variety of content and not just sexual. so i forgot to mention/clarify it can be harmful to just read sex and nothing else!!! however, i think i created a misunderstanding. i don’t only read dark fiction and i only disagree that dark fiction isn’t bad to read in itself! i read so many other genres and stories that aren’t just this topic. i feel comfortable reading it when it applies to men because of my proximity to it and already knowing that all people can do harmful things. at the same time i don’t judge women who do read it because it’s not causing any harm in the real world except for causing online discomfort and morality wars that are only discussed in small online spaces

my only arguments are dark fiction in gay media isn’t inherently harmful and it should exist but only when read with caution and the ability to separate your entertainment brain and everyday one. we should always read with conscious thought, but i don’t think reading dark media makes you bad or stray from the things you believe and even fight for. like… tbh ive been in real events where we actually fight for rights/spaces for lgbtq people to exist so i cant take this topic fully serious when it’s not reversing the progression that’s happening. the great people in these groups do indeed read horrible to good yaoi but then come back to normal reality and actually put in work for the gays and girlies
