It is by giving him benefit of doubt, knowing his past. Thankfully he has done mostly good things so far, but i am still suspicious since he still does not communicate with FL as well as he could. (I could totally justify Celphy being mad at ML for killing FL not even by accident) Alas i am not hater, but this story is so well written in comparison to many others i just cant help, but think about it more seriously than *oh my god hes such a misunderstood cutie* . I am immensly invested in this story now though to see ML grow :D along FL even since she still has things to resolve too, she sacrifices herself far too easily even though her actions tip the scales.
So tldr i dislike haters for outright hating ML, but i can see how he can be disliked. Like despite everything he shouldnt be given total leeway, but he does his best with what hes given. (๑•ㅂ•)و✧

we saw that ml's father was ruthless, heartless, and abusive... like... we should be happy that the ML turned out alright. sure, he's withdrawn... but that's to be expected? like, he barely was loved growing up--like what do u expect, some flowery, funny, extroverted guy? esp given their family too... like he could hardly have had any non-familial interactions growing up with the poisonous blood
AND he was assaulted in the past by the princess?? like, i'm sorry that you don't like him??
