I agree, it's okay to not know the professor's intention but your best friend? That's weird and makes the character too dumb, especially for Wooju who's part of social circles and smart enough to work for a renowned architect.
A story that relies too much on the characters ignoring the obvious is NOT a good story. And wooju here is being so oblivious to everything, which is probably the author trying to drive the plot into a specific route, (that is probably the route where wooju ends up with the apeshit blondie.) And that makes it a nonsensical plot.
