Personally, I have stories I drop when it gets too abusive (those, I can usually tell for the beginning) or stories I understand differently. Sometimes it’s also that I got so far into the story that dropping it now is quasi impossible and the story is good enough to keep me engaged. Sometimes it’s also just about me hoping to see the abuser suffer and sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I also try to re-read the story to see if my understanding of it changes.
So I had a recent binge of the entire webtoon and knowing what I knew about Cesar’s childhood beforehand actually made every reaction he’s ever had rather predictable, which is ironic because he’s portrayed to be vastly unpredictable. Someone like that won’t change. The way he is, is essentially a part of his DNA. It’s who he became to survive and to expect him to change in any way shape or form would be asking him to basically regress. It could’ve worked if Leewon had met him a decade ago, bit it most likely would’ve led him to soften up and die or quit the mafia altogether. That’s just a different story.
I was trying to understand why Leewon wasn’t doing a better job at walking away from him until they had their “let’s try to kill each other combat style” date. When he realized that Cesar was going easy on him, his reaction was basically “you’re turning me off. Are you a man or are you a man? This soft shxt isn’t for me.” Then they went at it more seriously, he shot Cesar and proceeded to mount him because that just turned him on so bad that it was admittedly one of their best erotic scenes. He didn’t just like dominating him in that field, but knowing he wounded him. The violence of it all. It’s also when he realized he was so in love with Cesar that he was ready to just be with him forever (aka marriage). Ever since then, I realized that while we as readers know everything violent and manipulative that Cesar does is fkd up, Leewon just accepts that about his character. He can’t pretend he doesn’t know who Cesar is. He sees him clearly, openly hates his behavior, and also loves him anyway. It’s strangely unconditional…
Those are the reasons why I personally love this messy webtoon. Because they’re both twisted in an interesting way.
I was just thinking that. My thing is that Ceasar and Leewon are a pair of lunatics. Leewon is horribly reckless it's to the point he was about to deal with a whole assassin during his first lawyer case. He knows what he's dealing with he even had a feeling that Ceasar was going to come after him, when it was publicly announced who Leewon's father was. Ceasar didn't fall in love with this half Russian half korean guy he fall in with a reckless unhinged and very self aware lunatic of a lawyer. They are a messy couple. It's the same reason why people loved luscious and cookie in empire. If you don't like it that's okay, I like Earl grey hot chocolate I'm not expecting everyone to like earl grey hot chocolate.
I loved caesar before the rape and shooting thing happened. He was so gentlemanly, concerned about Lee won, caring, knows boundaries, not pressing him for anything and then all of a sudden he looses all common sense and respect and becomes toxic af. I love the whole story and if we divided it into 1) Lee won and caesar 2) abduction and rape arc 3) battle royale arc 4) meeting the in laws - I absolutely love 1) and 4) with all my heart. They both are huge masochists and soo freaky (● ̄(エ) ̄●) At least we have cutie daddy and hottie step bro
There is so much that people really need to talk about when it comes to their relationship. I am reading this because it was recommended to me by a friend and I love the characters but I wish there was more development especially on Caesars end.
Like I feel like it is so glossed over that he assaulted Lee Won, shot him, kidnapped him, lets him almost get killed and knows about it, and then emotional and psychological manipulates him by harming himself and saying the reason was because of Lee Won. Like why does it feel like the entire story is just fine with that? (don't get me wrong I have read painter of the night and rereading it I have the same complaints I guess its something that just isn't my cup of tea.
