I think the author’s own bias toward certain tropes really ruined the story. I can just imagine the mangaka in their room, like, “Isn’t it so romantic when two people mutually yearn for each other for a long time? I find that soooooo romantic

    You can still build a family even though you’re men??? You can still be family even without children?? Or by family issues chiaki means parent issues! Meaning he wants parent figures???? I don’t think they’re talking about that since they want to “build a family together” not join one…?

    my theory is that the author has some internal homophobia

    (because the yudai explicitly states that they can’t build a family together even though they’re men, but doesn’t explain why they can’t be together because they’re men. leaving the audience to basically agree, “yes, because they’re men they can’t be together. That just makes sense!” Even though it makes no sense.) but I’m probably overthinking this
