Be glad the manhwa changed it this much. In the original novel there was no punishment. For anyone. It's just swept under the rug. The most we get is years down the line author gets bored and cheats on Cliff so they divorce. And they did way more messed up shit in that version, they were tame here.

Originally the king decided he wanted to either kill the author or imprison her, but Edith was the one who asked him for a lighter punishment for her, since she didn’t wish for her to go through that sort of treatment
