I don't need characters to be "good" I simply need a well-written story. This so-called "nuanced" queer portrayal has been presented in a character who operates as nothing more than an obstacle to another couple's relationship. I don't find that impressive at all.
In the beginning it had potential. His storyline was introduced in conjunction with Yiyoung as a young gay man of limited relationship experience potentially expanding his gay circle, and it happening through the kind of (for cishet people) normal "meet cute" flirtation and the complications that come with that. Not so different from redhead's story!
But then it regressed into a series of contrived and cliched "misunderstanding" escapades that squeezed out the substance and left most of us frustrated because we *know* how it ends. So why are we here? To learn that some men are immature? There is more to any character than that but that's all one can muster because he's locked into a cliched role as written.
None of that makes this badly written imo. Cliche? Yes. Honestly I think that's it's only major fault because it's predictable. I *guess* you can say its bad writing since it's such an obvious plot choice for seasoned readers but we're going to have to agree to disagree, I still think author is handling it well enough.
Considering how toxic and downright harmful a lot of BL and yaoi is in its gay rep, yeah, I'm kinda impressed. The bar for this genre is in hell frankly, its not hard to get surprised by a story that lets characters talk things out and develop emotional intelligence instead of violently r*ping and cheating on each other
Nothing wrong with characters being obstacles and exposing weaknesses in relationships, it happens all the time and does drive growth, thats the whole point. But yeah, its is super cliche and overdone. I still like the character anyway ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ Well, its not over so we'll see what happens next
What he did is very wrong but I don't hate him. I actually really enjoy this, author has written a really refreshing depiction of being gay (still a minority, mind you) and feeling unwanted. Growing up does nooot mean you've mentally matured, a LOT of men have proved that in real life. Im not surprised in the slightest that a 30 yo would act like this, even a 50 yo. If all characters were "good people" the story would be pretty flat. This is one of the few most realistic/healthiest depictions of the queer community I've seen in manwha (which is pretty sad), author deserves their flowers. Queer people are messy af, it's fun to see it!! And we get to see new sides of our MLs and new backstorys cmooooon ( ̄∇ ̄")
