I like the ML, i empathize with him, and i've read the novel too.
I want her and him to be happy even if they're not together.
ML has a very sad and tragic past and life. He didn’t have much choices, but he could have been more kind to her wife. But also just think of his life, how could he know better. He isn't a completly bad person, he's doing good for his country, even if he did participate in the revolution her and her family would have faces the same end, he only saved her because he "loved" her or more like the idolization of her.
She was innocents but also part of the problem. She wasn't that empathetic with him or the people in her country until reality hit her. And even then she didn’t understand, never asked, she was avoiding the answer because it was different from her dream reality and want she knew. It's very sad.
They both didn’t knew each other, and only after their divorce they started to know and talk. A mich needed talk to heal and move forward.

His past does not excuse his treatment towards her! He had no right to take it out on her when he realized she wasn’t the girl he THOUGHT her to be, you can like the guy if you want but don’t make excuses for him he is absolute trash

You're entitled to your own opinion.
I'll say this. His past makes ones understand his actions, his reasons, his pain, his life. That affects a person mind.
I'm not saying what he did was right or wrong( as you are).
We can see the story from many sides. Yes, he was cold, ignored her suffering, and negleted her while she was depressed.
But to say all that happend to her was his fault isn't true, just think in history we see how a revolution is the work of peoples fight for their rights.
Her family fall and the world she lived in wasn't just his doing. She would have become depressed or died even without him taking part of the revolution.
To me he and her are more complex to simple say they're wrong, they make me sad.
Also i feel like the comic is making him a bit worse than the novel.
