Edward isn't actually her brother. In every flashback we've seen it's always just been Ariana and her mother or Ariana and her grandfather. If he really was he brother there's no way we wouldn't have seen a flashback of him younger by this point.
Maybe he's really just Alena's brother or maybe he's an illegitimate child of a disowned family member. Point is I don't think Edward and Ariana are related.
