In flash backs depicting Koichi (Aono's father) and Hitomi's (Aono's mom) relationship before Aono and Teppei were born, it shows what the couple's relationship was like and how Hitomi had a rather unhealthy dependency/obsession with Aono's father and in turn takes the loss of him very hard, and struggles mentally to raise the two boys by her self. She is unable to cope with the stress and difficulties in her daily life and in turn takes out her negative feelings on her children through hitting them and abusing them. Teppei is the youngest and is the most needy so he acts up frequently due to his young age. Hitomi is unable to handle this, as his tantrums and desperate clingy nature is all too much for her (although all he wants is a loving mother) and she feels his ill behavior is a criticization of her. His clinginess, desperation for love, and need for reliance all reminds her too much of herself and it's because of this she detests him and he is subjected to more physical and verbal abuse out of the two brothers. She knows how to manipulate Aono though, as he is willing to do anything for her love and approval. She weaponizes love and affection in order to pin the two boys against each other. Aono develops a complex towards Teppei. Teppei, confused and hurt because of his brothers seemingly unwarranted lashing out towards him and combined with the abuse from his mother acts up frequently at home and school. Hitomi put both of the boys through hell every chance she got, Aono who goes to desperate lengths in order to please her, just to be rejected and shamed, and Teppei who had to endure physical abuse, alienation and was berated with insults by her regularly. Hitomi was a weak minded, insecure, spineless woman, who's only seemingly reason for living was for her husband. She only knew how to depend and leach off him.
