TJ is toxic and they make each other worse. TJ literally set up Ian so he would murder a guy to prevent him from going to be a racer like his dream which would result in him leaving TJ. TJ then made sure Ian would serve jail time for it even though it was technically self defense. TJ is also heavily involved in the criminal underworld and Ian doesn't want to be a criminal anymore.
I suggest you reread the story or else someone like this is going to skew a whole different story
