This manhwa has such a hold over me and has led me to think about it more seriously than it is, lol.
What if Mr. Grim Reaper and Seowoo have met before in a previous life? We know Mr. Grim Reaper has a sin he has to work off and he has wondered why Seowoo is so unfortunate, not only having died young but even after death. Given the straight laced nature that Mr. Grim Reaper has, drinking habits aside, it’s hard to imagine he was a human that committed a selfish sin. He also doesn’t seem to know his name, and couldn’t tell Seowoo his name when he asked. And King Yama never calls his name. It seems like a lot of Korean works have the grim reapers memories of their past life wiped. Its implied but the author hasnt given an explicit explanation of why no one refers to the grime reapers by a name.
There was a side couple with the other grim reaper, where he commits a grave sin. He is sentenced for it forever, and Yihwa, the dead human he was involved with is also punished. We don’t know what Mr. Grim Reaper’s sin is and why Seowoo is so unfortunate. I propose Mr. Grim Reaper’s sin also had to do with messing with fate, to save Seowoo in their previous life. His was not as severe as the other grim reaper’s, but it was bad enough that he became a grim reaper and Seowoo was able to reincarnate but with the punishment of dying young and having bad luck. I base this theory on 3 grounds:
1.) We don’t know what Mr. Grim Reaper’s sin is. And Seowoo’s life and death are both very unfortunate, something unusual that a long time grim reaper like Mr. Grim Reaper takes note of. Mr. Grim Reaper is a straight laced person and doesnt even think to rob the vault for more necklaces even when the white haired dude thinks he will. Mr. Grim Reaper says, worst comes to worst, he’ll just beg them. The worst case scenario is to beg, he doesnt think about stealing. So his sin is probably not something morally corrupt 2.) Mr. Grim Reaper is very sweet on Seowoo, and their relationship quickly develops into one that is filled with mutual understanding and care. Mr. Grim Reaper can’t help but want to take care of Seowoo. And Seowoo seeks safety and comfort from Mr. Grim Reaper, something that he has not sought out from other people, it is not habit to do so. As if that had been their dynamic before, and it’s easy to fall into again. Seowoo thinks that Mr. Grim Reaper just likes to take care of people, but we see no other indication that he is like that, though King Yama does acknowledge Mr. Grim Reaper has always been a softie. 3.) The other grim reaper serves as a parallel to our mcs. As grim reapers they both faced the same situation and fall for humans and the dilemma between their feelings and their duties. But I think the other grim reaper’s desire to see Yihwa again when he reincarnates parallels not the desire of present Mr. Grim Reaper but of the past human that Mr. Grim Reaper was before.
But then again, maybe it’s not that deep lol and the parallel is more literally, it really only shows the what if situation of if Mr. Grim Reaper doesn’t let go of Seowoo., One Summer Day is a very good story, with or without them having met in a previous life.
