I think it’s for control and power. If he couldn’t have her, it’s better that she’s dead and gains a sense of superiority from the unreciprocated feelings. To him its power, if it was love he would’ve commemorated her and put her in high regard. But he objectified and put her in a pedestal and took the final control of her life.

I'm not really sure I get it but I think from his perspective, he was a hunted down bloodline that the king sent to the frontlines to get killed off, the war was ravaging the whole country, people were being starved and massacred in the name of the nation he was supposedly protecting, while the one person he cared about was who she was because she was essentially kept in the dark about everything and trusted the same system that was killing everyone and even more so him and everyone in their group. What he loved about her was also what highlighted how broken, corrupt, and hypocritical the system was. I think maybe he was driven to a corner mentally and went kind of mad. Telling her as she used to be back then the truth and his perspective would never reach her ears.
While I don't understand how someone could go through with such an act of betrayal, at the same time I do think his choice wasn't necessarily wrong in the grand scheme of things. His act saved a lot of people, even if he didn't care about that. The problem is it stemmed from a complete nihilism towards life and everything around him, which has clearly twisted him. I think him getting obsessive like this over her after finding out she wasn't dead makes then a lot of sense. It's like he's given one more chance at having meaning in his life. Him moving on is actually far more unlikely than Estelle. She has friends, comrades, a lover, a family. People who have helped her heal and mourn her old life. He might have money, power and some security now, but he's essentially left with nothing.
After reading this manwha for who knows how long already, I still couldn't wrap my head around the idea of Khalid killing the love of his life (as he calls it), Estelle?? Like what was the reason??? If you6so obsessed with her, then why kill her in the first place????
