I think the ending had a bitter taste of reality tbh. Life is long and usually there's no happily ever afters; that much was conveyed by the author. Touji and Kiyoto started off their relationship in the wrong way - Kiyoto was a rebound after Touji got his heart tragically broken and sleeping with Kiyoto was what opened him to his feelings for Yachiyo. After that, he locked and hid those feelings away to run away from his problems.

When he met Yachiyo at the funeral, even though he loved Kiyoto now, his instinct was to get comfort from Yachiyo but he knew he couldn't anymore so he bottled it all up even with Kiyoto there.

Point is, Touji'a inability to understand his and other people's feelings until it's too late is making him an emotional wreck. He never moved on from Yachiyo whilst simultaneously loving Kiyoto. He still dreams about Yachiyo well into his relationship and even after saying "no I don't want to see him".

Touji still held on to the button from the wedding day; a physical fragment of his existing feelings, which was slowly unravelling after meeting up again. For Kiyoto, he probably didn't want to be there to find out if Touji would wind up picking Yachiyo over him. He even just knew that it may not be him and the pain would be worse later. Besides, what better way to find out what you want than to break up and stay single and sort out your emotions. After he does that, and he still loves Kiyoto then there's that. Kiyoto seemed fully resigned though.

I feel like this manga would've fared better if it was longer with a conclusive end. Instead it's short and open-ended, which leaves a bitter taste but i get it. Even though it shows it as if touji and yachiyo get together, it could also be that they don't after everything. They may see completely different people after moving on, touji could go back to kiyoto, or they may date and break up later. It's life. Shit happens.
