Hey so ive been dreading reading this for so long and saw your comment on the main page and decided to read it just so i (also autistic) could understand what you were talking abt lmao
Anyways so I think it was bc how insensitive he was in general. So people can be "allies" and think bc they support a community they aren't prejudiced however this excessive support can be more prejudiced than other behaviors
In the case of autism image those people who try to advocate for you when you didn't asked them to and in their attempt they lowkey portrayed you as an infant. Even if they have good intentions they're making things worse. Now going back to the story, Tanaka was being tone deaf, saying he support them yet calling them out in the middle of the street not taking into consideration his surroundings but also not considering how they would feel abt it
Being gay in conservative societies like japan can be horrifying, and most feel ashamed of being who they're so from their perspective it's kinda like getting caught stealing and someone would yell "oh you're stealing bc you need it and can afford it?? I won't tell bc I support that"
(Srry if my comparisons don't make sense, I tried )
Oooh that makes sense. I've been lucky not to be in that situation as an autistic person before but one time my mom made me come out to her because she saw a post I made on tumblr about going to an LGBT event and she wanted me to tell her I'm bi, and she said I didn't need to hide it because she's not against it. It's like that? I didn't connect it before but that makes sense. How come you were dreading reading this one? I quite liked it
Yesss it's exactly it.
Abt dreading reading this, I knew it would be good since I know this author's work but I have been in a reading slump for a while and anything that's on my want to read list feels like a full time commitment hahs I'm glad I read it in the end since it was rlly nice, loved that MC collects bird plushies
I think my autistic self's social skills aren't good enough to understand how Tanaka-san was so bad when he said he'd support them and that he's not prejudiced? Is it because he put them in a difficult position especially when they weren't clear about their feelings with each other yet and not in a stable relationship? But to me that doesn't mean he's prejudiced, just a bit insensitive?
