yaoi is bl but was more commonly used before
There are 2 type of BL in Japan, eversince though. Shounen Ai, is the direct translation of BL in Japan, which is the non-smutty BL genre. While Yaoi is the matured BL. Just like Josei and Seinen for matured audience version of Shoujo and Shounen Genre.
I'm confused why does the yaoi tag become a tag that contains story with smut/sex scenes because iirc yaoi tag is just outdated bl in jpn terms lol
