Not wanting to protect Aaron because "I thought that's what he wanted to hear" is bullshit. But it makes sense that his disturbed mind would think that, Yujin gives every sign in the world that as soon as he hears about deepening feelings he disappears from the radar, so Aaron thought "if I'm an asshole he won't think I want him and he'll stay"
