maybe she’s not supposed to be ugly in the first place, it was just the bullying that made her think she was… after all bullies are known for harassing the weak and she also has a super gorgeous sister in comparison so it would make sense. she’s just average it seems.

It’s the freckles. Unfortunately I’ve read many stories, manga, webtoons, etc., where people are considered ugly simply because they have freckles.

It’s a stupid trope. But then again, I have more freckles than there are people in New York City. So I’m biased.

I get the impression that the author thinks people are born with freckles (they aren’t), and that’s why her mom called her ugly as soon as she was born. The beatings came later, but definitely didn’t help.

I dunno how the author feels about freckled people but I can tell you with a good amount of certainty that freckles historically have been regarded as “ugly” because a clear and porcelain like complexion was generally preferred.

Also, the same concept of freckles being ugly are applied to a lot of different fantasy historical manwha’s or manga’s I’ve read as you said, even some anime do this, so I really dunno If I’d say the author personally dislikes freckles, it might just be a trope they used.

Yes this is true. (Especially so for China)

Part of the reason is, way back then: if you had any skin blemishes (such a cuts or burns even), you were considered undesirable or mistaken for working class. (...worse case scenario: pigmentation mistaken for a disease)

As far as I'm aware, "freckles" in Asians are typically caused by age and sun exposure moreso than hereditary reasons, which meant that those who were outside more (aka the working class) were more likely to form blemishes. Same reason for darker skin colour, which is associated with day labourers.

I don't get the choice of your words, since you've read many stories like this isn't it a bit crazy to make an assumption of what the author thinks on people with freckles? I just thought that the author might probably be just using a typical story background for the characters like the others.

That's not what they said at all. The only thing they said about the authors thoughts on people with freckles is that they may think that people are born with freckles. Which would be why her mother called her ugly as soon as she was born. Everything else they said just sums up to them thinking that the author is just using a well known (and stupid) trope where people are seen as ugly just for having freckles. Maybe you should read it again, and a little more closely.

You literally just said what I've said except for the fact that I do not think that it's right to assume that the AUTHOR itself thinks like that. Read the "I don't get the choice of your words", and fyi considering that this a fantasy stories, the reason why her mom called her "ugly" might be just because she didn't inherit her mother's eyes and hair colors in contrast to her sister who has inherited her beautiful mother's features or maybe "ugly" because she inherited her abusive father's features that maybe abuses her mom too. To sum it up I did read it and have my own reasons on why I think that just like the commenter that I replied too alr?:)

I mean every "ugly" character in manwhas typically have freckles so its a pretty safe assumption id say (freckles are literally so cute tho so i think its the norm thought / culture?(
Also I dont see why street boys (as shown in this manwha) would laugh and call her ugly just because she didnt inherit the mothers features (they probs dont even know who her mother is) but oh well

Bro... you clearly still don't understand. Wow. Also, no one is making assumptions. It's a theory based on the situation in the comic. Very different.
