i mean the comment section isn’t specifically for commenting nice supportive things, it’s here to share your perspective on the story. it’s really useful cause people bring up grievances with the story that sometimes i didn’t realize were there, so it makes sense that people comment even if they don’t like the work

Penelope > ruby. At least Penelope isn’t useless and she was also abused physically and mentally, but she actually tries to survive other than faking her personality that doesn’t work and everyone can tell. She’s a lot more flawed, well written and complex compared to Ruby. Also, at least the story isn’t repetitive as fuck and actually has a plot other than the character getting abused by everyone, including a 14-year-old that she couldn’t even overpower.

Let's be honest, everyone of us has like one thing we hate subjectively. And some people like to express that online, especially within this very specific nieche of shoujo where you might not have friends to argue about it with. You want a comment section with people just glazing the story all the time? That's boring af. Put on your boxing gloves mf, defend the story instead of insulting people for critisizing a thing you like. If you don't want to deal with that negative opinion then don't, it's that easy.

Nah, I'm 100% you think better of Penelope because she can girlboss. You just feel better about her because she fights her way out asap, while Ruby struggles to. For you, for a bunch of people, it might be annoying that she doesn't try harder and stay ahead of things, but in Ruby's situation her hopeless desperation is more realistic if anything. Penelope wasn't being physically and mentally tortured by her brother, was she?
Not every protagonist has to instantly clutch the first chance to plot their way out of their shitty circumstances. Ruby is clearly characterized as the victim of her family and needs some serious time and peace of mind to start finding who she is as a person.
I agree that Penelope is a good MC, but they're both good protagonists. If all the suffering on Ruby's part is too much for you all I can say is: Skill issue.

No, I have read better female leads that are on the weaker side like under the oak tree where I actually like them. I just think there’s many other stories that portray abuse way better than this. It’s generally a poorly written story i’m tired of people trying to make it seem like it’s a masterpiece or it’s well written when it did in fact is not. I think under the oak tree did a better job in someone actually trying to survive and what it’s like for abuse victims. The story also did not oddly feel like trauma porn, even though I’m also not a huge fan of it bc of the ml

Penelope literally had to survive death multiple times and she literally had no one also Ruby situation isn’t very realistic either like at all she’s getting abused by every single character and her Prince charming is saving her ass and always being conveniently there every single time. Like a fucking maid was trying to manipulate her and try to murder her, which realistically would never happen because even though the maid was close to them like a mother they know their position and they’re just a maid at the end of the day and they are their master. I can name other things as well like it just feels like trauma porn and doesn’t need to be added. We always see her is get assaulted. What kind of storyline is that. Also, the brother was added there because the author is a fucking weirdo who has an incest fetish not because they wanted to give abuse representation. His whole character disrespects a religion and is historically inaccurate like he never loved his sister in real life and he was a historical religious figure in catholicism. The blatant colorism is disgusting I can name so many other things of what makes the story, problematic and poorly written. It’s not because she’s a weak ass bitch she’s just badly written and plain like every other character.

Ngl I agree on that now, Under the Oaktree did it a lot better.
If this manhwa was better written there wouldn't be this many people yapping to begin with. Gotta call myself out here: I've been only keeping up with the updates and it's easy to forget the details and have a biased memory. Never noticed the colorism either until now.
Still, Penelope melts into this pile in my memory that's just any other" slay and go figure out this game system"-FL.
Her story's better written too, but her situation's wildly different from Ruby, sure she faced death but she got no one beating the shit out of her for no reason so it's like eh.
Their storyies serve a different purpose (lmao torture porn vs trying to win a game).
Yea the incest is weird, but why does the author have a fetish for it just because they took a real person and twisted them into a weirdo? The author is kitty&spices and the only other thing they wrote is A fairytale for villains which looks not-incesty? It's the artist who drew some weird incest yaoi.
Portraying specific religions as bad is doo-doo, but showing corrupt religious institutions doesn't mean shit, that's just history. Do you know what the Borgias were historically known for? I recommend you look that up.
There's no reason to get hung up over that anyway imo. The incest brother too, who cares what person he's based on, what all of them are based on? The author yoinked names and vagues plot outlines from the Borgia history, so what? You're telling me someone's gonna read this and actually believe this happened over what history tells? RL Borgia drama was spicy but no one's gonna look at these anime ass people and be like "oh so catholism is bad".
But that's as far as I'll defend the story, the colorism just isn't okay.
People here are so bitter. Goshhh. Why is there a need to share that you didn't like it? Not to judge, but if you don't like it, shut up, will you? Let other readers read it. We spread love, not hate. Hehe!
