although the condition of that time is like that, but linhua family is really considerate towards her, including the male lead and her brother, they asked her opinion and informed her well (and truly felt sorry when they couldn't tell her important information even if to protect her).
many story in modern setting didn't even do that! they can make a girl a total damsel in distress and cause misunderstanding everywhere.
although linhua is powerless she doesn't give off a damsel in distress vibe... she accepted her weakeness and continue to do what she can do best. it is due to her time setting that she can't do anything.
that's why i like this story despite the romance take too fast, it never cease to bore me
How the men spoke to and of women in these times makes me sad... They seemingly control everything, she wasn't able to refuse an engagement herself, wasn't even allowed to go out and while she is certainly privileged as a rich daughter from the chancellor I can't say shes free to life her life how she wants to...
Ofc she can still find happiness in that, and I'm sure some back then did, but so many other opportunities were denied
