Lol really? This is the point in other romance comics where I would dip out SO fast, but the way it's (the suddenly jealous and over protective ML and the "defenseless" captive FL) being handled is surprisingly good. This is the first time I'm not side eyeing the ML and getting the ick from looking at the FL. For once both their perspectives are mostly reasonable and equally valid. Hopefully they stick the landing ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
The thing is, I do also think they both have very good reasons, but reasons don’t always justify the means. I understand he wants to protect her and she gave him more than enough reason to, but taking away her freedom and having her under constant monitoring (I don’t think they even do that in prisons) is NOT the way. They both communicate but they don’t listen to each other or try to understand, especially ML brushes everything FL says off, even if it’s serious. Sometimes I get a feeling that he treats her like some cute puppy. And FL, whenever she firmly stands up to him for very valid reasons, she immediately gets weak-minded and feels guilty about it. Toxic ML’s only work if FL is either also toxic or if she can handle them. But Giselle slowly started falling into this “damsel in distress” trope. If ML is toxic and FL is weak-minded it just won’t work, it will become a toxic (or abusive) mess. So, yeah, I agree their reasoning is valid and very complex, but it doesn’t mean that keeping her captive (and especially monitored 24/7, that’s what rubs me off the worst) is the solution. They should’ve sat down and both try to come up with actual plan, and he especially should greatly support her in training her powers. That would be the best solution.
Also, he may care about her and try to physically take care of her, but to me personally, it doesn’t really seems like he respects her. That he takes her feelings into account or treat them seriously, respect her as a person, her boundaries and needs. That’s one of the reasons why to me she sometimes seems to him like a cute, amusing pet, rather than an actual person. That’s my perspective on it at least
...that's part of the trope though? Usually it's way more oppressive than this and the FL is more docile or mentally broken than this. I don't think the inner workings of any relationship (even the healthy ones) are completely consistently rational or reasonable tbh. And yeah I totally agree that the aren't seeing or treating each other like equal partners. But that's kind of the point though. They're both so damaged that they have self love issues and have a hard time thinking of themselves as truly loveable. Even though there's clearly something there, they aren't in a place yet where a real relationship is feasible. It works so far since even when she didn't have access to magi to resist/protect her, he still listened to her. Maybe I'm forgetting a lot but I do remember him letting her have her way a lot, usually only insisting on others being there because of her wanted status. Anywaaaaay lol I'm here for the cute mess and hope the author sticks the landing and doesn't have it devolve into something icky and irredeemable.
I like the art, but I cannot with the dumb FL, so I dropped it. ML is fine but not fine enough to stick with the FL
