He can't detect it because his aura is from his mana and he uses a spell to conceal the mana hence conceal his aura. Even stronger swordmaster can't detect his aura with the spell.
Tho, I also believe MC is stronger because I hate that scoundrel.
I can proudly say that he's below him. I mean- if the count can't detect mc's aura but our mc can, it means our mc is much stronger aura wise
