I think Granny's passing (it's inevitable) will be the turning point for Dan. All his life he essentially lived for her and once she was diagnosed, her recovery was the one thing he strived for. When she passes, he'd be left with a huge gap and a realisation that he's utterly & miserably alone. If he manages to overcome it, Dan would be unstoppable and no mma horse in the world could bring him down. He'll realise the most important lesson he put off for a while, self worth.
