Very true, that IS a very common way for spirits to be created or yokai even. Tho it could even be that it was Kaito who created them, since his like for our main boy is seemingly strong too.

I think the spirits surrounding and possessing Yuma are his lingering feelings for Kaito. Idk what happened to Yuma, but maybe his feelings for Kaito were too strong and manifested into spirits?? Lol. Anyways, we love a caring and protective boyfriend :) I'm rooting for u Kaito
