I mean it does make sense that the mother and father couldn't have gotten Oscar at 5 & 8 BUT it never said they were Oscar's parents nor "the mother is a little over the double of Oscar's age, three years to be precisely. ..." That would have made more sense. I felt so dumb xD

Yeah, i think it was just a translation mistake on the chalk board, because she specifically called it linear equation in her thought bubble, and her work process was definitely linear equation. But the wrong translation made it look like the initial question was just a basic addition/subtraction word problem.
Like I was so confused, why 17 instead of 34, that's why I came searching the comments. I am glad I wasn't the ou one lol.
