There are many parallels in the story, and theo held a lot of similarity to his mother in the sense that her passing made him wear the same horrified expression as her when she feared for theo's safety and wanted to shield him from his father. When cedric came along and slept in the same bed, theo is seen making the same terrified expression as his mother did and the scenes are essentially the same. Only now, theo takes over his mothers place.
Since his mother committed suicide, it's very possible his fate might parallel with his mothers, but we will never know.
The open ending really screwed with my mind. Should I assume that his conversation with his mother and this "together forever" is about him going to commit suicide? The guy finally broke down...
