in all seriousness though, this is a manga spoiler. yes hes been dead since last summer (i think). id normally be more shocked and ask if you were living under a rock but i just met someone a few weeks ago who didn't know either so ig ur not the only one anyways hes not dead in the anime yet.

anyways as to answer ur question, he just did it cuz he fucking hates the guy lmao. gege (the author) literally hates gojo im not even joking look at how he drew my goat on the last volume cover bro looks like an actual frog.

also after gojo croaked (pun intended) last summer the whole internet was basically memeing on it heavily. idk if uve seen the "nah i'd win" meme but thats basically where it comes from. i'd argue that it made the series more popular actually. literally EVERYONE i knew he died. my own boomer very-much-not-into-anime mom knew he died somehow. everything felt like a different timeline back then ngl it was insane.

hes dead because Gojo was way too overpowered and overshadowed main characters, Gege (the author) was kinda stuck, he needs to remove Gojo for the plot to move on and MCs get their shining time. he didnt expect Gojo would be so popular and even his own wife is a fan of him.
the soul of Gojo is gone, he's dead DEAD, but someone else took over his body. Gege used to make distasteful jokes about Gojo and he was kinda happy when Gojo's dead ~JOOOKIIINGGGLLYYYY~ but you can tell regardless of his personal feeling for Gojo, his own character, he just want Main characters get the attention he felt they deserved.

hes kinda good with in timing Gojo's dead because its just a mere several chapters before the series ending for good. if he moves on the series with more arcs without Gojo, it will lose the popularity.

another thing i forgot to add is that the reason it was memed on so heavily is cuz his death sorta came outta nowhere? as one of the other commenters mentioned, gege was kinda running out of ideas at this point cuz gojo was fighting the main bad guy of the series.
so there were 2 routes gege could take, either
1. gojo is defeated and the mcs move in to jump bad guys ass
2. OR gojo wins (cuz he's the goat), but then our mcs wouldn't have anything to do and the story would just end there.

2nd option isn't nearly as narratively compelling so gege chose to go with the first route, which wouldn't have been that bad on paper. the main issue was that gojo was absolutely BODYING the main baddie. like spoilers (the main baddie is sukuna) and gojo was literally just beating his ass. had twitter calling sukuna, fraudkuna for MONTHS, only to turn around and have gojo killed OFFSCREEN.

i forgot to mention that earlier but the level of disrespect gege has for him is lowkey insane. and then in the next chapter gojo is saying that "oh yeah sukuna probably could've beat me easily from the beginning actually he was holding back"

another thing, sukuna lowkey only won because SOMEONE ELSE jumped in for him. u remember how he tamed mahoraga in s2 shibuya? well turns out sukuna used mahoraga in the fight to CUT THROUGH INFINITY OR SOME SHIT??? idk gege pulled that shit out of his ass.
