Agreed, he was probably wondering aimlessly around but subconsciously searching perhaps following any woman that had blonde hair, but then continued to wonder aimlessly when they didn't have the correct eye color & appearance he felt drawn too.

So I am just guessing but since leaving his estate causes abnormality like pain or those vines closing the gate… perhaps, if he were as desperate as they make him seem, he would keep attempting to leave, regardless… and if he actually managed to escape perhaps the curse would have affected him, he would not have left unscathed, causing amnesia??
And he would keep walking wondering what he was searching for and who he was…
Perhaps he had been walking a long time and then would ask anyone he met the same question? Idk
Perhaps he felt something for her, cause he did say that he made it so that she would desire him and he would desire her (?), something like that???
