I think the problem is exactly that he's been controlled his whole life. In the start as well it seemed like he didn't really care about anything, even if it was related to himself. What I'm trying to say is that he's been disappointed by everyone so much that another person adding to that doesn't really matter to him, he's already used to it, even if he did hope for differently this time
If it was me I would've blocked them all and stayed on the hotel and cut all of them from my life. It feels like his whole life he's being controlled. Plus the shock that ido was kinda controlling his social life. Like tf how could you ride the same car as someone who betrayed you. Dude take a car and stay over somewhere. Or stay on a hotel. He's a promising adult I dontk think money is any problem
