It's just a guess since it has been a while for me but I think that the duke was always after the maid (who is the current duchess). The duke only married Vanessa to get to her. So the revenge could be towards him.
Can someone spoil what she means? Did she actually always like the duke? Was she mad she was pressured into marrying him? Was it just because he tried to keep it a secret??? What is she talking about
