Yes, honestly, I thought I could read this story without much thought, just waiting for the fucking scenes of JinJian. But Jian’s character is so captivating that I had to reread carefully to avoid missing any details about him.
It’s clear that Jin and Jian have known each other for a long time. Jin is obsessed with “bringing back” the Jian he used to know (perhaps the Jian from before his self-destructive and addiction).
To Jin, Jian’s deep concern for Jitae is the root cause of Jian’s suffering. This leads me to believe that Jin is aware of Jian’s true plans, plans that seem to involve some sort of sacrifice for Jitae, which Jin strongly disapproves of. Jin wants Jian to hate Jitae to the point where Jian no longer cares about him at all.
The truth about Jian having special feelings for Jitae is subtly implied many times. From the way Jian always wants Jitae to call him Hyung, to how Jian consistently intervenes in matters involving Jitae, it makes me wonder: why is Jian so invested in Jitae? It doesn’t make sense to say it’s out of pity, and Jian and Jitae don’t seem close enough for such devotion. This led me to a theory: Jian had a connection with Jitae’s mother in the past.
The significant age gap between Jian (33) and Jitae (26) might be intentional on the author’s part to hint at this. Perhaps Jin and Jian knew each other from an orphanage run by Jitae’s mother. Jian’s concern for Jitae could stem from how Jitae reminds him of his mother.
Imagine the weight of his existence, coupled with the knowledge that his mother was the one who killed Jitae’s mother. The sheer tragedy and despair of such a truth
it’s no wonder Jian would want to die.
