He is a "student", and in the same chapter he starts school, its explained that he is several hundreds of years old cause of a curse. He's become a "student" as part of a deal with someone, and after a month one of his wishes would be granted.
Next time just read it before jumping to conclusions if you see a confusing clip, read it or ask for clarification.
