These 'terms' aren't really used by the DSM and the characteristics you wrote about are the characteristics of people with antisocial personality disorder. Each person with this disorder is different because it depends on the individual. Terms like 'machiavellian' or 'psychopath' are unofficial terms which basically describe the same treats found in people with antisocial personality disorder. They are very limiting to something as complex as human nature, hence why not used in diagnosis. Some personality features are also not always stable but susceptible to change over time. There's truly no defining label for anyone. That's why open terms, which take into account the differences of each individual are important. Machiavellianism is derived from Machiavelli, a court master who knew how to manipulate situations for his gain, something people who lack empathy do, focus only on personal gains. This can be said for the term 'psychopath' as well. See how all the features between these terms overlap?

Oh my gawsh, I didnt expect a smart person to show up and show out. I didn't know anything about antisocial personality disorder, thanks! I know they all overlap in those characteristics, but recalling Machiavellianism on the dark triad spectrum helped my pea brain process. Cuz I just knew psychopath or narcissist was not the word the whole time. What you said makes so much sense!

I wouldn't call my self smart, just knowledgeable but thanks! Also, you definitely don't seem to have a pea brain, considering how open you are to new information. Ignorance over specific information doesn't make you stupid. Now you know
Glad i interested you on the term, it's a pretty interesting personality disorder which often doesn't occur alone. It's often accompanied with other disorders such as narcissistic personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder e.t.c. Interesting stuff.

Agreed, that's why I'm sad a lot of people seem to hate this story solely due to the toxicity. Yes, ml is toxic and it's not hidden, but he's a well written character. While his personality disorder explains how he is primed to think, it certainly isn't used to justify him, in fact it's made clear that he could be better towards mc but he just chooses not to, since that's the easy option and what he's used to. Judging from the spoilers though, he'll eventually recognize that his behavior is going to have massively bad consequences and make his try harder, even if it defies his nature.

RIGHT?!? I really wanna throw him into a dumpster fire, but I can't deny he's so well-written. The emotions the timid MC goes through as a physically and emotionally abused person who doesn't think he deserves better and can't bear displeasing others are so realistic it hits home. This domestic violence relationship is horrible, but clear and thought out
Have you heard of the dark triad in psychology?
**Spoiler alert!***

Y'all, this dumbass isn't a psychopath. He's a Machiavellian! That's why he's so dumb that he doesn't understand that people don't like to get kicked, r*ped, or stabbed. They are characterized by interpersonal manipulation, indifference to morality, lack of empathy, and a calculated focus on self-interest. I smart, he dumb.
