It might also be more like how there are many cases of overbearing parents dressing up their children to be beautiful and contest in pageants and whatnot? A lot of these cases are classified to be cases of abuse because the parents often starve their kids so they become skinny and "beautiful". So I think it might be a reference to that as well?
