While I agree that toxicity is highly overrated, the truth is that this manhwa is so bland, it only makes sense for garbage to be more popular and have a higher rating because garbage is at least somewhat entertaining.
In this story the characters are too bland to make me care about them (despite it being a story thats purely about the characters' emotions) and the dialogue is awkward. This doesn't feel like reading a depressing story about human emotions, the manhwa itself is as empty as irl depression makes life feel like.
If I wanted to feel a whole bunch of nothingness I could just stare at a wall. This manhwa isn't any more entertaining than staring at a wall is, and it doesn't cause more emotions either.
If you want a BL story that's depressing because of the MC being suicidal and suffering from PTSD I'd recommend "beyond memories" that one's actually depressing because if how depressed the MC is and NOT because of bland the writing is like in this one...
I have read beyond memories. And I won't deny that It's good but the plot of that manhwa and of this is completely different. "Beyond memories" already has enough episodes for readers to tell what it should be rated. On the other hand, this is not. It is still not established enough for it to be rated 8.9 and comparing PTSD with suicidal intentions is so flawed honestly as it does not even grasp the seriouesness of the comic. It may have been bland but it should not be rated so low when it is still in establishing stage. I highly believe that masterpieces can exist in low ratings but a lot of people end up avoiding to read them seeing the low rates.
BOTH MCs are suicidal and BOTH MCs have PTSD, I'm comparing how their mental health is written not what their symptoms are.
In beyond memories I can clearly tell that the MC is very very obviously highly suicidal by the way he behaves, how he's drawn, the writing and pacing, etc, even though him being suicidal hasn't been mentioned yet. His PTSD too was shown to us long before it was ever mentioned.
In this manhwa however? I only know that the MC is suicidal because he constantly manages it every chance he gets and based on the writing the author needs to constantly remind us bc I'd genuinely forget he's suicidal after a few chapters because he's written more like a character who wants to live rather than one that wants to die. Sure not every suicidal person behaves like they're suicidal from the outside but the MC here is written as if all his emotions are written all over his face. (A good example of a depressed character who appears happy on the outside would be Ai Hoshino from oshi no ko for example). Quite frankly it feels to me like him being suicidal is nothing more than a running gag in this manhwa bc him being suicidal is clearly written like a joke rather than like a story about dealing with mental health issues.
This manhwa is clearly a "tell don't show" type of story and thst type of writing genuinely doesnt deserve anything more than a rating of 7 even if it was entertaining but this fails even at that; it's literally more boring than staring at a blank wall.
It has 13 chapters already that's more than enough to get an idea of how something is written, it's so boring that I actually didn't even manage to be able to read all the chapters available.
You talk about gems and masterpieces but this one ain't one and unless they change the writer it won't become one either. It's poorly written boredom wrapped up in gorgeous art.
No way. It's my opinion but 13 episodes are nowhere enough to judge a manga. Have you read "Hit on by a kinky guy". It's the perfect example of why you should not rate a manga too early. It has 189 episodes now and the way the author totally changed their story writing as well as the character development is better than many A listed mangas rn.
If you don't find it entertaining that's alright but rating a manga so early on is what bothers me. And if you do it that's on you. Nobody's stopping you. But I believe every good plot manga has potential because the author evolves with the manga.
It's poorly written, not a gem.
I'm sorry but if someone can't tell whether a story is written in the "tell don't show" type of way or in the "tell don't show" type of way after 13 whole chapters then they're quite frankly either illiterate or extremely dumb.
Yes stuff like plot, lore, character development, quality of plot twist, cannot be judged after only 13, but things like writing style, how characters are handled, how characters behave & what their core personalities are, pacing, how much comedy there is and the quality of the jokes, how entertaining a piece of fiction is, etc, ALL of these are painfully obvious within 10 chapters or less and it's more than enough to judge a story.
Fluffy BL is my favourite genre, psychological stories my 2nd favourite and comedy my 3rd favourite... So yeah I read the genre this belongs to all the time and every single other piece of fiction I've ever read that belongs to it is so much better.
And yeah when you insist that it's a "crime" to rate a "gem like this" below 9 while talking about a story with the writing of an average wattpad story from a 13y/o "I'm not like other girls" fujoshi then yeah, I might go into detail on why it sucks bc it's ridiculous to insist on this being a gem.
13 bad chapters are too many bad chapters for it to start getting promising later on imho.
Like... I'm sorry but unless they're unemployed, retired or live on disability support/money then no adult will have enough free time to read most of the good stories they come across. So suffering through 20 episodes of an anime or 50 chapters of a manga because that's how long it takes for it to become enjoyable is nonsensical to me, because a) there's still no guarantee of it being your cup of tea after "it starts getting good", b) you could've read and watched so many other amazing animes and mangas in that time that you now missed out on bc you don't have enough free time to read/watch them too and c) there's more mangas where the writing deteriorates over time than mangas that go from bad to hidden gem
Same to you man. I never forced anyone to enjoy it lol. My problem was rating mangas nowadays solely based on entertainment purposes because then a lot of people end up missing out mangas that do actually get better. People can have their own opinion but to go to such degree to deny a common flaw in the manga reading industry nowadays where people rate shit comics so high just because they are "entertaining". I mean 7? for such a good plot which does not involve any toxicity which is hard to find nowadays in mangas where authors are all going for the much profitable concept of " red flags. That alone is a very braveworthy thing for the author to do. And mangas like this gets ignored all in the name of "boring". It's okay if you do not like it in just 10 episodes which is embarrasing that you claim you can judge any storys on that, then that's on you but not right for you to rate it low. To be able to rate any kind of fiction you have to read the whole thing, which is basic knowledge that that commentor is lacking
It is a crime to put stories like this under the 9.0 rating like literally what's wrong with it that it's 8.9?! I be seeing mangas with 3 eps with a toxic af seme with lots of fuckin be rated 9.1 and it's rated so low. Unbelievable. I really freaking miss the times when yaoi wasn't such a hot topic for everyone.
