i didn’t see the mom that way at all! i think the author did a great job at acknowledging that abusers typically arent completely evil. the mom was awful to the daughter and had a sad backstory but the mc clearly states that the mother will pay for what she’s done too. i think it’s more real that the mom is pitiful and sympathetic bc it makes it more frustrating that she was complacent. i also think you aren’t taking into account the history that’s being portrayed. wives couldn’t disobey their husbands and at the time it was typical of women to be extremely subservient due to the oppression they faced. the wife would’ve likely been beat if she disobeyed. sorry but she’s a victim too. the mc wasn’t the only person being abused. hell the sister was too. i dislike them just as much as you but you have to give the author some more credit in their writing. all in all, i think the mom requires some more analysis than you’re giving her and your take lacks a bit of nuance.
Think whatever you want but i ain't changing my thoughts. The mother was a victim yada yada ok, the women in that era blah blah my ass, still nothing changes the fact that she didn't do anything even secretly show a lil bit of love to her child but then suddenly oh Lord, she realised she needs to actually speak up and of course mc's "love" for her mother who she never really knew came out and "oh mother daughter" drama started.
Mothers no matter what situation, even worse than this do anything they can possible to protect their child or at least let them know that even if the world is against you I'm still with you but she did NOTHING! I do not give a shit about the mother's pov because it's nothing but an excuse no matter how many time i try to see it. This victim card bullshit like people like you pull up are the reasons criminals are roaming freely out of jail. The mother has 100 of opportunities to look after the mc because the scum of a husband never actually cared for MC's existence or how the mother is looking after her as long as the older girl stay first.
No to say there are 100s of mangas out there and even irl where mothers who went through worse than this woman still managed to give love to the child being literally neglected and abuse but no she didn't even try until the ml came.
You wanna make her oh so little victim needing forgiveness because she didn't even have a single choice to show love, do it. Idgaf, just because it was "normal" it doesn't make it right nor worthy of forgiveness. My original comment was that! Now have a good day Or whatever because again idgaf.
Read that person’s reply with a little more media literacy and you’ll realize they’re literally saying she’s written that way intentionally. She is intentionally permissive, and subservient to her husband’s abuse towards her daughters. It’s part of her character. She, in turn, is abusing her daughters by being a neglectful bystander. They’re not telling you to change your opinion and love the mother and forgive her. They’re saying you’re not SUPPOSED to forgive her. You’re supposed to see how she is also abusive by not breaking the cycle of abuse that she also was a victim of. The author is showing readers how this is ALSO abuse, not just textbook beating your child. Knowingly letting someone abuse your child is a form of abuse. Then again this is the internet so you can have whatever opinion you like, but I’m just saying everything you have said in both your comments is how you’re SUPPOSED to feel about this character. In the comic it even talks about how the daughter doesn’t forgive her, because she was a part of this abuse. You just didn’t understand the reply to your comment correctly. You clearly GAF enough to write two comments about it. I don’t mean to be rude with my tone, but it’s just frustrating to see you not understand what the previous person was trying to convey. It really doesn’t even seem like you want to understand what they’re saying anyways. But whatever.
Honestly this is such a good break down of everything I was thinking. The reason why I like this is that it's a very believable and real complicated form of abuse, neglect. There are a billion fairytale type manga where the family is unbelievably evil, or the characters struggle very hard to still be good. This series hits that sweet spot that feels real. Where the perpetrator is a victim that perpetuated the cycle. Still at fault but shows how people can be a cog in the abuse machine instead of just some great evil doing evil deeds and twirling their mustache while they do
Agreed. No matter the time period, enablers of abuse will not be pitied by me because they still ultimately made that choice. Even if that choice was made due to fear of their husband, their actions were detrimental to the child and caused more trauma. Ultimately their fear and perceived helplessness was put higher than the mental wellbeing of their child.
The image of a helpless mother this manga tried to potray the fl's mother as absolutely pissed me off! She was no helpless about not loving her daughter WHATSOEVER! the father was a scum and sister grew up up a bitch okay but couldn't the mom give fl the love ???? She wasn't bound to anything! The husband was focused on the bitch of a sister but never forced the mother doing the same!?? Couldn't she love the fl!?? But no she didn't. Being a bystander of an abuse is the same as abusing. Like fuck off.
