hmmm, I don't think he meant not to fight with the girl, but rather that he shouldn't join the expedition.
with that, his intention was valid, but his reasoning was invalid. as someone who tries to assume all duties by himself just to protect their love ones they can really go to such lengths to be over protective.
Whether he meant to or not he did fight the girl, that's what I was pointing out.
